Why Did the United States Enter World War One - 1693 Words
Why did the United States enter World War One. The industrial era had many effects, not the least of which was plunging the world into world war. One must consider the relationship between eras and events as a student of history. The industrial era created a perceived need in America for raw materials and markets for goods. The United States was not alone in this desire for expansion. All the industrial nations were in open competition to develop vast empires that would provide them with the fuel to run the factories of industrialism. This imperialist competition led to tension and the creation of vast armies. The willingness to use these armies was known as militarism. In order to feel safe (there was a pretty fair degree of paranoia asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Now most of Europe was engulfed in war. In the end the Triple Entente (England, France and Russia later to be joined by Italy, the United States and Japan) defeated the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria Hungary and the Ottoman Empire). The conflict which was long and bloody was marked by trench warfare and the use of chemical weapons. It was fought mostly in French territory. At the conclusion of hostilities Germany was still in French territory but it was relatively clear that the combined industrial might of the Triple Entente would prevail. In actuality the influence of the United States is questionable. Germany hoped to negotiate a favorable treaty but as we shall see this was not to be the case. The Treaty of Versailles was signed ending the war and blaming Germany for the entire conflict. This blame and the consequent punishment set the stage for years of resentment and another world war, something American President Woodrow Wilson had hoped to avoid. So, what did all this have to do with America and why did we enter World War One? Most Americans favored staying out of the conflict and President Wilson publicly and formally stated that the United States would follow a policy of neutrality. Constitutional Law Paper Free Essays
Constitutional Law Paper BY ctndoee_272 Constitutional Law Mid Term Paper It is evident that over the past few years, American Democracy has been loosing its power. The causes toward this effect are many. Some amongst the many are decreased political participation and the minimum quality of functioning of government. We will write a custom essay sample on Constitutional Law Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now Before understanding that these are some of the effects that has caused the waning in American Democracy one must understand what Democracy is and its measures as well. Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state. It is equal access to power where the people are the supreme source of that power. There are rights, laws, and policies that reflect the will of the people, consent of the governed, and popular sovereignty. Amongst the government, there are 6 basic principles within the democracy. They are Popular Sovereignty, Rule of Law, Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, Judicial Review, and Federalism. The U. S Constitution is built upon these basic principles. It is logical that by having these 6 principles to abide by, the U. S Democracy would have the highest ranking hen it comes to measures of Democracy. It would make sense that American Democracy would have a high rank in the following categories: Electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, functioning of government, political participation, and political culture; but, in reality it isnââ¬â¢t that way. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIIJ), the United States has a world rank of 19 as opposed to Norway who has a ranking of 1 . The Democracy Index developed by the Ell-J shows that the U. S is has the lowest ranking for political participation. This is one of the factors that are causing our government to lose power. This political issue is caused by the voting requirements set. Under California law, you must meet several requirements in order to be able to vote in state and local elections. You must be a U. S. citizen, and a resident of California, who is eighteen years of age or older, or who will be eighteen years or older on the date of the next election. Additionally, you must not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction. Finally, you must not have been found to be mentally incompetent by a court. With these voting requirements set, we are limiting the amount of people who can vote and participate in elections. Democracy, as a system of governance, is supposed to allow extensive representation and inclusiveness of as many people and views as possible to feed into the functioning of a fair and Just society. ââ¬Å"Limitations to the amount of people who can vote, voter apathy, disenfranchisement, parties not representing people, and voter intimidation are all reasons for a low voter turnoutâ⬠. The common criticism leveled at those who do not vote seems to be to blame them or being apathetic and irresponsible, noting that ââ¬Å"with rights come responsibilities. There is often some truth to this, but not only are those other reasons for not voting lost in the assumption of apathy, but voting itself isnââ¬â¢t the only important task for an electorate. Being able to make informed decisions is also important. In a local voting survey conducted by the class the question that followed if the person was eligible to vo e â⬠Then why donââ¬â¢t you vote? â⬠was asked t . I was d iscovered that the reason many people do not vote is because they are not informed correctly or there is the bservation that the leading parties are not that different from each other and they do not offer much said to the voter. The media not being much help or being biased sometimes also make it harder for the electorate to make an intellectual decision. In addition, the other percent of the people surveyed responded that they have little or no time to vote. A solution to this political issue is to make voting easier and more convenient. With this said, establishing no excuse absentee ballots would introduce an early voting system that would allow thousands of voters to vote at their onvenience. Currently, registered voters can only obtain absentee ballots if they are unable to be in the polling place on Election Day due to illness, travel or religious reasons. By doing away with these restrictions, registered voters could apply for the ballots and vote without having to fgure out when or how to get to their polling place. As our world has been more fast-paced and as California residents are busier trying to hold on to their Jobs in this difficult economy, our voting system needs to catch up. If voting is made easier, more people will vote increasing our political articipation. The Democracy Index provided by the Ell-J also shows that the United States has a score of 7. 5 in functioning of government. This data ultimately corresponds to the score the U. S has in political participation. The United States, as a form of democracy utilizing the ââ¬Å"First Past the Postâ⬠(FPTP or FPP) system and gerrymandering results in a government, would ultimately yield a relatively moderate two party system. Additionally, the United States Government doesnt function according to the will of the people. The United States Government as a representative government means that the representatives in its political office represent the people but function based on their own beliefs and opinions. Thirdly, the average person has no direct impact on who the president is. ââ¬Å"That Privilege falls to the Electoral College, under the 23rd amendment of the constitution. ââ¬Å"00Ultimately, this government ââ¬Å"of the people, by the people, for the peopleâ⬠, fails to truly recognize the power and worth of those on the outskirts of society, those who canââ¬â¢t fend for themselves, those who donââ¬â¢t conform to he status quo, those who are not well off or better, and those who ââ¬Å"fail to contributeâ⬠to society. Again, attempting to increase the voting rate will assist our ranking score for the functioning of government, as it will be more accurate toward what the people want. Over the past few years, American Democracy has been loosing its power. One of the main causes is that there is not enough political participation amongst its citizens. ââ¬ËAs their responsibility our government has to find a way to facilitate the voting process for electorates and that way increasing our political participation that ill then establish a more democratic functioning of government. The best action to revitalizing democracy in the United States is to change the voting system itself ââ¬â the method that determines how we cast our votes for candidates and how the winners are decided. Our current winner-take-all voting system is one of the least representative and least democratic of all forms of elections. Adopting a better voting system could go along ways toward enhancing the political power of average citizens, and this would help to blunt the influence of private economic power. Accounting standards and theory AASB 136 Dealsâ⬠Free Samples
Question: Discuss about the Accounting Standards and Theory AASB 136 Deals. Answer: Introduction AASB 136 for the Impairment of assets states the requirement for accounting and reporting the impairment for most of the non-financial assets. It specifies when the organization requires performing the impairment test, in what manner it is to be performed and the related disclosure requirement. The application of the AASB 136 is broad and the requirement for this may be open for the interpretation. AASB 136 deals with the impairment test for all the intangible and tangible assets, except for those assets that are covered under other IFRS. To attain these objectives the standard needs the organizations to test all the assets for impairment when there exist an indication for impairment or at least annually for the intangible asset and goodwill with the indefinite period of useful lives (Bond, Govendir and Wells 2016). Disclosure requirement as per AASB 136 for impairment AASB 136 on impairment requires the extensive disclosures with regard to the test for impairment performed and the recognition of impairment. The disclosure requirement for goodwill is more extensive as compared to the impairment for the other assets. The major requirements for the disclosures are as follows: The recognised amount for impairment test that are recognised and reversed and the circumstances and events that were the reason behind that (Guthrie and Pang 2013). The amount of goodwill for each cash generating unit and the group of cash generating unit Application of the valuation method that is value in use method or FVLCS method and its strategies in determination of the suitable assumptions The major assumptions that are applied in the valuation of the asset that includes the discount rate growth rate that is used. The sensitivity analysis when the possible reason for the change change in a major assumption would result for the impairment that will include the headroom for the calculation of impairment and the amount for which the assumption will be required to alter the results of the impairment (Kabir and Rahman 2016). Impairment disclosures by Wesfarmers limited Wesfarmers tests the goodwill, intangibles, equipment, plant and property for the purpose of impairment: Annually at least for the goodwill and intangibles that have indefinite period of life. Where the indication is there that the impairment recognition that is done previously for the assets except the goodwill may have altered Where the indication is there that the assets are expected to be impaired (the assets which are analysed at least on each reporting date) If the assets do not create independent earnings and the VIU cannot be forecasted to the close of the assets fair value, the asset then goes for impairment test. Further, the asset is impaired if the carrying amount is greater than the recoverable amount. Moreover, where the indication is there that the impairment losses that are recognised previously is reduced or does not exist anymore, the asset is tested again and if found suitable, then the impairment is reversed. From all these discussions, it is analysed that Wesfarmers Limited meets the requirement for disclosures of impairment as per AAB 136 (Wesfarmers.com.au, 2017). Key issues and complexities with impairment The main issues with the impairment are that the values of the assets are always under microscope as the conditions of the market are always under alteration. Maintaining the investors trust regarding the transparency and the accuracy of the assets value is crucial and the regulators and the investors are concerned regarding the recoverability of the assets in the vulnerable market. In this circumstance, strong impairment testing is crucial. Other issues with the impairment are Difference between value in use and fair value: it is crucial to have the clear idea about the difference between the value in use and fair value methods. The fair value method measures in terms of which the independent investors will pay for the asset, whereas, the value-in-use reveals the value that will be internally created by the asset for the business. This variance is revealed in the supposition that is accepted under each model (Bepari and Mollik 2015). Using of the suitable rate of discount: various nations use the capital asset pricing model and weighted average cost of capital to assess the rate of discounting for the testing of value in use. This is suitable only when the risks associated with any CGU do not vary with the whole business. In actual, the various CGU may implement various rates of discounts owing to the difference in currency risk, country risk, product and industry risk and the maturity of market in which the CGU operates. Further, the risk associated with the assumptions of cash flow shall be considered to assure that the discount rate is suitable. Finally, the rate of discount must reflect the incremental rate for borrowing and gearing in the current scenario of the market that may differs with the actual interest rates and gearing of the organization in the current market scenario (Malone, Tarca and Wee 2015). Tax: tax is another complexity associated with the test for impairment. A general mistake is the inclusion of conflicting assumptions regarding the tax of the model. There is likelihood that the organization is wrongly discounting the pre-tax cash flows by utilising the post-tax rate of discount. If the post-tax rate of discount is being used then the post-tax cash flows also shall be predicted- or 30% will be effectively added to the cash flows. Another frequent mistake is including the benefits from the tax losses of previous years under the VIU approach. Therefore, the models for impairment testing must be updated and must be able to reveal the businesss current status as there may be substantial alteration in the economic environment over the year. Further, the data from the market is hard to collect, especially in the absence of latest public transactions. Four specific issues that must be considered while calculating impairment Discount rates the rate of discount for impairment calculation is not mentioned in the annual report. Further, the assumptions of long-run growth rate under the model of discounted cash flow for both the FV as well as VIU less the selling cost and the key assumptions like rate of discount, profit margin and growth rate of revenue that are made in the calculation must be stated. Goodwill allocation as the goodwill independently does not create any cash flows, therefore, the recoverable amount for goodwill cannot be measured as an individual asset. However, most of the times the goodwill contributes to the cash flow of the CGUs. Therefore, the goodwill is distributed to the CGUs. The report must state the details regarding the allocation amount of goodwill to each CGU (Zhuang 2016) Cash flow from foreign currency cash flows from foreign currencies are very common and it shall be treated as per the specific requirement of AASB 136. Generally, the future cash flows are forecasted in the currency in which they are expected to be received. The rate of discount for this cash flow is not simple and easy as the rate differs based on the country and risk profile of the country. Therefore, in the report, these details must be included (Linnenluecke et al. 2015). Compare the like with the like the cash flows that are tested mist be aligned with the assets that are tested for impairment. Further, the projected cash flows must make the allowance for working capital investment and must be clearly mentioned in the report. References: Bepari, M.K. and Mollik, A.T., 2015. How to Check Cross-References
How to Check Cross-References How to Check Cross-References How to Check Cross-References By Mark Nichol A word, phrase, or sentence that directs the reader to related information in the same document (or, in the case of online content, perhaps a different document), whether said document is an article or a book, is called a cross-reference. This post discusses best practices in employing cross-references. In printed or online content, a cross-reference is a text element that introduces the reader to a subsequent element of content, whether text or one or more graphic elements. For example, an observation or assertion may be followed by a statement such as ââ¬Å"See further discussion in chapter 6â⬠or ââ¬Å"See the columns labeled ââ¬ËCauseââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËEffectââ¬â¢ in figure 1 below.â⬠Note a couple of details about these examples: First, neither example uses page numbers to locate the cross-reference; this is because, in the case of a printed document, pagination may change when the content is reprinted or is posted online. (Also, the designations for types of content- chapter and figure- are not capitalized, nor are similar terms such as appendix, part, and table, and numbers are always styled as numerals, not spelled out.) For the same reason, avoid directions such as ââ¬Å"See next pageâ⬠; write ââ¬Å"See below,â⬠instead, especially to direct the readerââ¬â¢s attention to a figure or table. Cross-references can also refer to preceding elements, either by specific references or by calling attention to, for example, ââ¬Å"the abovementioned factorsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"the aforementioned locations,â⬠ââ¬Å"the foregoing discussion,â⬠or ââ¬Å"the participants mentioned above.â⬠General references similar to these seldom precede their referents, and equivalents of abovementioned and aforementioned that replace the first half of each word with below and after are not valid words, nor is aftergoing. (Prementioned is a real world, but I have never seen it used in this context.) On a related note, it is essential to check all cross-references in a given piece of content. Any references to the title of the overall content itself that appear in the content should match, and the writer, and/or an editor or proofreader, should verify that all elements listed in the table of contents- part and chapter titles and any headings and subheadings- and related lists of such elements as figures and tables should be verified against the lists. (At the proofreading stage, page numbers in the table of contents and similar lists, which are entered in the electronic file from which the publication is created only after the text is paginated, should also be cross-checked against the respective pages.) In addition, all cross-references discussed in the foregoing discussion should be checked to make sure that, for example, when figure 5 is mentioned in regard to a certain topic, fact, or data point, that information appears in figure 5. Likewise, a caption for an illustration or a photograph, or a reference to the image in the running text, should be inspected to verify that it correctly identifies what is shown in the image. Chapter numbers and other identifying information should be cross-checked in the proofreading stage as well; such indicators may have been changed at some point because, for example, two chapters have been combined, one has been deleted, or a new one has been inserted. At the same time, or in a separate review, spelling or treatment of terms in the text should be checked to ensure that it matches those shown in figures. For example, if a table with a list of names refers to someone as Smythe, but the text uses Smyth, the correct choice should be verified and the error corrected, or if a map identifies the most populous city in India as Bombay but the text uses the newer standard form Mumbai (whether in reference to the map or in isolation), the map should be relabeled, or replaced with one that uses the modern form. Also, when footnotes or endnotes are employed, text that prompts a note should be checked against the wording of the note to ensure that they are pertinent to each other, and when a citation is noted, it should be checked against a list of references to make sure, first, that an entry for each citation is listed and, second, that the information in the citation (for example, a last name and the year of publication) matches the information in the references. In a separate step, the references should be cross-checked against citations to make sure that every reference in the list has one or more corresponding citations; reference entries without a citation should be deleted. URLs and links to email addresses should also be verified, and links should be tested to ensure that the destination of the link is correct and correctly identified. THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT OF BUSINESS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT OF BUSINESS - Essay Example More to the point, Arthur Andersen partnership was also dissolved at the time. Arthur Andersen was one of the five biggest audit and accountancy firms globally during the scandal (Li 37). Enron executives, particularly Jeff skilling as well as Andy Fastow, were key to Enron plunging into bankruptcy as well as ultimately dissolution. The acts include: market to market accounting as well as special purpose entities (SPEââ¬â¢s). None of these acts was illegal; however they were employed in illegal business plans (Mackey and Kristine 349). Enron Corporation was an American company based in Houston, Texas. What's more, Enron being one of the most prominent companies in the globe, it was also one of the companies that collapsed very quickly. Over and above, being the biggest liquidation reform at one time, Enron scandal was undeniably the largest audit letdown in American history (Li 37). This paper examines why the Enron scandal occurred? Whether the investigations into the scandal wer e fair? How the scandal was discovered? What went wrong? And what internal controls failed? Enron Corporation was established in 1985. Enron was as one of the globe's leading company dealing with natural gas, electricity, pulp and communications ahead of being declared bankrupt in October 2001. Enron was nearly universally regarded as one of the country's most innovative companies in the late 1990ââ¬â¢s; a new-economy nonconformist that abandoned stuffy, aged industries with their bulky hard assets for the lax world of e-commerce. Enron persistently operated gas lines as well as built power plants, however it gained prominence for its distinctive trading businesses. In addition buying and selling gas plus electricity futures, it established whole new markets for such nonconformist merchandise as weather futures, Internet bandwidth as well as broadcast time for advertisers (Li 37).Very few people were acquainted with precisely what Enron's business was. Bethany McLean, a reporter for Fortune, inquired, ââ¬Å"How exactly Enron made its money?â⬠The question is hard to answer; the "particulars are difficult to get hold of as Enron keeps many of its details secret for what it terms 'competitive reasons.'" a different analyst remarked, "Enron is a big black box." Hence, even Wall Street had very little information about Enron's actual business practices. However, Enron is not unique in this regard. Enron akin to the majority corporations, operated relatively independently by opposing transparency and stakeholder participation (Brenan 35). Jeffrey Skilling proposed market to market accounting is a scheme to increase stock prices, hide Enronââ¬â¢s losses as well as attract new investment. The market to market scheme entailed that once a long-term contract was signed, the amount of which the asset supposedly would trade on the future market is reported as profit in the present financial statement. So as to soothe the investors to maintain a steady profitin g condition at Enron, traders at Enron were forced to predict low discount rate on the long-term contract with Enron as well as high future cash flows. The variation amid the computed net current value and the initially paid value was viewed as the profit of Enron. However it is unfeasible to gain in a long-term operation manner, and so it is evidently illegal furthermore immoral. Additionally, it was reported that the US Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) at the time permitted Enron to employ mark to market account

Roman Catholicism In Brazil Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Roman Catholicism In Brazil - Essay Example the impact of the next aspect of the Brazilian religious marketplace to be considered: the Catholic churchââ¬â¢s declining power and influence relative to other traditions. (p. 245) The erosion of Roman Catholicismââ¬â¢s longstanding dominant status in Brazilââ¬â¢s religious marketplace over recent decades is most evident in the dwindling of the Catholic rank and file. For instance, census data showed that from the 1970s up to the present, the Catholicsââ¬â¢ share of the population was dipping in contrast to the steady rise of the Protestant percentage. The most reliable estimates place the Catholic population in the country to have dropped to a staggering 75%. (Smith and Prokopy, p. 246) This decrease seem to reflect that which some called as a veritable internal diaspora in which Catholics by the thousands have switched their primary allegiance to evangelical Protestantism, Pentecostalism, Umbanda, Afro-Brazilian traditions of Kardecism. Also, this has encouraged what came to be known as privatized type of Catholicism, wherein the faithful, instead of strictly adhering to church teachings, continued to have only irregular contact with the priests bec ause of their shortage. There are some critics who view this sea of change in the Brazilian religious economy was the Catholic hierarchyââ¬â¢s shift to a more tolerant stance regarding religious pluralism. One should remember that that during the preconciliar period, Afro-Brazilian traditions and Umbanda were systematically denounced by the press, often at the instigation of the Catholic hierarchy. Whether there are some valid issues in regard to the exodus of some Catholics towards other denominations or not, the fact remains that Brazilians have a deep sense of religiosity. In this regard, we go back to how popular Catholic traditions are hardly episodic, fortunately they are also not routinized. (Reily 2002, p. 213) Furthermore, while popular Catholicism stands in opposition to the centralized official church, it is

The Symbolism Of The Journey
The Symbolism Of The Journey The symbolisms in the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and the short story I Used to Live Here Once by Jean Rhys have a similar contextual moral aspect. Each piece of literature represents a journey that is taken by the character. The contrasts of the two literary works are the theme and tone of the works. The comparison of both works utilize the third person point of view. The third person view variation in The Road Not Taken is the utilization of the objective point of view. According to Clugston, 2010, The third person technique is used in both the poem The Road not Taken and the short story I Used to Live Here Once; which is successful in allowing the reader to comprehend, empathize and visualize every aspect of the journey and how it was dealt with it. (Kindle Locations 2423-2439) According to Clugston, 2010, these literary works utilize An external narrator who takes a detached approach to the action and characters, usually to create a dramatic effect, and does not enter into their minds is using an objective point of view. (Kindle Locations 2437-2439) The allegory and motif aspects of symbolism used in both; I Used to Live Here Once, and The Road Not Taken provide insight in to the characters present and past life. Another symbolism in the story I Used to Live Here Once, is the after death implication. This story implies the character has moved from life to death. It explores what the deceased is feeling and what they are experiencing after death. Another difference between the poem and the short story is the author Jean Rhys writes with a somber tone, reflecting on death and the afterlife. The depiction of the characters stance reveals the somberness of her spirit. Her arms fell to her sides as she watched them running across the grass to the house. That was the first time she knew. (Kindle Locations 3792-3795) This is also the moment she realizes she has crossed over. While the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost represents life and its choices to pattern or construct your life by or after. Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. (Kindle Locations 783-784) The comparative literary works use metaphoric symbolism throughout the content. The use of these metaphors is very simplistic. According to Aragno, 2009, The classical view of metaphor (since Aristotle) as a product of languageà ¢Ãâ ââ¬â¢the device of dramaturges and fruit of the poetic imaginationà ¢Ãâ ââ¬â¢has given way to a modern understanding of metaphor as the way we initially process and articulate new concepts. (p. 1) In the comparative literature the metaphoric symbolism is represented differently. In the poem by Frost, the metaphor is characterized by trees and roads. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth. (Kindle Locations 778-780) The allegory concept is displayed through the entire poem, which is a representation of the moral aspect of choices and decisions that are a factor of life. The poem infers two stages of life, younger and older. Frost uses basic allegory references to emphasize his point and view. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. (Kindle Locations 791-793) According to George, 1991 Readers of The Road Not Taken have been warned by Frost himself against casual readings; he stated that the poem is very tricky and that its subtle mockery contains a hit. (p. 230) This allegory reference in the poem allows the reader to reminiscence on personal choices that were made during similar periods and phases in life. Likewise in the short story I Used to Live Here Once also, allows the reader to envision dà ©jà vu experiences encountered during life. Pursuant to George, 1991, the literary speaker of this poem refers to an older version of self whom he attacks. In many ways the speaker older and younger selves are alike. (p. 230) This motif is similar to the short story motif where the speaker refers to life and death. Each speaker is referring to a journey in life that must be taken, whether wanted or not. Both literary works use a subliminal symbolism that resonates within the reader. These literary works both implement a metaphoric and persona allusion of the author. Pursuant to Wolfe, 1977, In the short story I Used to Live Here Once, Rhys returns in spirit to the Caribbean home she had revisited materially in the third story of the book, The Bishops Feast, a description of her first homecoming, as a middle-aged woman, in twenty-five years. This is symbolic of the border she has just crossed, and looking at the local landmarks. (p 300) The persona technique utilized all through the poem and short story allows the reader to postulate appearances of the character from the narrative theme. According to Newman, 2009, fictional characters are fully embedded in their discrete fictional contexts, their intelligibility is enlarged by the application of framing principles their study shares with our understanding of real human beings. Newman further claims that fictional characters, in addition to benefiting cognitively from the projection of actual-world structures onto them, contribute to our understanding of actual-world configurations by returning the projection back to their real-world prototypes. (p. 73) This concept thereby provides credence to many readers conceptualizing the characters association to the authors. Each literary work bears some resemblance in a stage of the authors life cycle. There is a comparative commonality of the recurring motif of various depictions of familiar and unfamiliar articles in both literary works. According to Aragno, 2009, After Goethe, he showed that scientific, as well as literary, acuity may express itself through poetic imagery: the mark of this vital, spirited envisionment is that it results from the fine-tuned, creative observers efforts to concretize and convey new patterns of understanding. (p. 31) This continual use of symbolism allows the reader to conceptualize different aspects of life. By continually viewing different aspects the reader obtains varied clarifications of the poem. According to Gibbs, 2011, Allegory is a cognitive action in which people apply a metaphoric mode of understanding to situations and discourse that typically does not contain metaphoric language per se. My claim is that allegoresis is not a specialized mode of interpretation, but a fundamental human impulse to draw diverse connections between concrete and more abstract experience. (p. 121) This theory in essence would account for readers interpretation of Robert Frosts The Road Not Taken as a depiction of only one phase of lifes regrets. When in actuality the poem is reflective of lifes entire journey; it is like looking into a mirror at whats behind you. Viewing this same principle with Jean Rhyss I Used to Live Here Once, readers must rely only on the abstract experience to conclude the characters death. This complementary use of the allegory theme allows the writer to draw the reader in for exploration of the poem or storys contextual and conceptual meaning. One comparative stance for these literary works is the use of an inexplicit empathy response from the reader. In The Road Not Taken the readers empathy is piqued by the text, I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: (Kindle Locations 791-792) This section is inferring regret for choices made during an earlier stage of life, which invokes empathy and thoughts of broken dreams. In the short story I Used to Live Here Once, the readers empathy is vexed with the verse Her arms fell to her sides as she watched them running across the grass to the house. That was the first time she knew. (Kindle Locations 3792-3795) This last stanza of the story leaves the reader empathizing with the characters realization of looking from the eyes of death. According to Coplan, 2004, Several recent empirical studies indicate that readers tend to adopt a position within the spatiotemporal framework of narratives that is based on the position of the protagonist. (p. 141) In addition, Coplan, 2004, also states Empathy integrates cognitive and affective processes, creating a complex and dynamic psychological experience that draws on different capacities we have for connecting and responding to the world and those in it. The cognitive component of empathy involves using the imagination to undergo a shift from ones own cognitive perspective to the cognitive perspective of the target individual. (p. 143-144) This natural psychological perspective trait allows the readers to identify and empathize with the narrative characters in both literary works. By empathizing in their imagination readers can experience the characters pain, emotions, and perspectives. This allows for the readers visual association without actual physical association. This is evident in The Road Not Taken in which it states, Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth. (Kindle Locations 778-780) This invokes the readers visual imagination of looking down a road or street. In the poem I Used to Live Here Once, the following excerpt allows the reader to envision the characters excitement of being home. The road was much wider than it used to be but the work had been done carelessly. The felled trees had not been cleared away and the bushes looked trampled. Yet it was the same road and she walked along feeling extraordinarily happy. (Kindle Locations 3759-3761) The metaphoric, allegory and symbolic theme of the poem and short story assists readers in their cognitive and figurative visualization of the characters, their emotions, surroundings and the subliminal tone of the work. According to Gibbs, 2011, he states My aim in this article is to explore some of the ways that everyday language reflects the allegorical impulse, as a general mode of understanding, and to offer some empirical evidence from psycholinguistics that suggests peoples unreflective abilities to draw allegorical connections. (p. 122) In many respects each literary selection provides its own moral conceptualization for the reader to internalize and reflect upon their own lifes experience. New concepts and perceptions are realized as the text is reviewed by the reader. Pursuant to Gibbs, 2011, One of the reasons poetry offers us meaningful insights about our lives is because they, too often allude to enduring allegorical themes. (p. 123) In conclusion, whether it is poetry or short story, a readers perception will determine how the literature is perceived. The comparative view of the poem The Road Not Taken and the short story I Used to Live Here Once, offers similar themes, motifs and symbolisms with a basic moral aspect to lifes journey. The literary works portrayed the facets of the difficult journey of life and the realization of the journey after life.

Homage to Albrecht Durer Essay -- Biography
Albrecht Durer is known as one of the most gifted painters and engravers of the German Renaissance period. His works are known throughout the world and have inspired artists to not only study and learn his techniques but also to broaden his techniques, expanding his already famous style. Albrecht Durer was born on May 21, 1471 in the city of Nuremberg, Germany. His parents were Albrecht Durer and Barbara Holper. ââ¬Å"His father was a successful goldsmith, originally named Ajtà ³si, who in 1455 had moved to Nuremberg from Ajtà ³s, Hungaryâ⬠(Strieder). His Father married Barbara Holper who was actually the daughter of his goldsmith master. Durer was one of fourteen to eighteen brothers and sisters, many of which died young. At the age of thirteen Durer was educated at the Lateinschule in St Lorenz and also worked as an apprentice under his father and was fortunate enough to be familiar and have relationships with some of the greatest metal smiths of his generation. When Durer turned fourteen he began approaching his father with his paintings, hoping that if his father realized his artistic ability and skill he would let him study painting. There was a compromise; Durer was able to study his art after he mastered the goldsmith trade. His father showed him as much as he could and all of painting that he knew, until Durerââ¬â¢s skills soon surpassed his fathers. In 1486 Durer became an apprentice painter and woodcut artist to Michael Wolgemut. ââ¬Å"Wolgemut was a leader among the artists revitalizing the standards of German woodcut at the time, providing the many publishers in Nuremberg with book illustrationsâ⬠(Hapgood). His woodcuts followed the developments in engraving to portray volume and shading to a much greater degree than before. A... ...ng Hare, drawn a year before The Great Turf. Durer enjoyed his studies of realistic nature and always pushed himself almost to the edge of realism but holding back by adding a touch of abstract to add contrast. Artists pay homage to other artists all the time, either out of respect for the artist or to give tribute to their often unique style. Many artists believe it add a depth to their artwork that they alone cannot add so by using someone elses work to inspire or to enhance their own piece. Also by using the same or similar techniques it can add a sense of history or story to an art piece. Many artists have paid homage to Albrecht Durer. Homage for his many styles and homage for his many technique, from his engravings, to his water colours. One homage given to Durer is by Karen Kitchel through her piece ââ¬Å"American Grasslandsâ⬠in reference to ââ¬Å"The Great Turfâ⬠.

The Qualities of a Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
In The Qualities of a Prince, Niccolo Machiavelli discusses the attributes that he believes make for a good leader. Although Machiavelli wrote The Qualities of a Prince centuries ago, some of the qualities he advises a prince to have can be adapted to the leaders of today. Some of these qualities include being generous and being feared by the public. Machiavelli claims that if ââ¬Å"generosity is used in such a manner as to give you a reputation for it will harm you. â⬠Today, this advice is completely useless.Pope Francis of the Catholic Church is a prime example of how being generous is, in fact, a good quality of a leader. Recently, the pope has been venturing out of the Vatican at night to help the homeless men and women. Due to his generosity, people have grown fonder of Pope Francis, making him a better leader with loyal followers. Pope Francis breaks bread with the homeless and sits with them to show them that they are loved. These generous acts make him more of a lovabl e leader, and show the people of the Catholic Church that they are in good hands.Machiavelli also states that ââ¬Å"it is much safer to be feared than to be loved when one of the two must be lacking. â⬠This advice, on the other hand, is reliable today. A recent leader who is feared by the public is Kim Jong-Il of North Korea. Kim Jong-Il is known for being a totalitarian dictator, giving his people little to no political rights or civil liberties. He has also forced women into marriage, mandated abortions, tortured his people, executed citizens publicly, and used forced labor in prison camps. The fear of Kim Jong-Il and his incredibly strict and derogatory regulations allowed him to rule over North Korea without being assassinated by his people. Kim Jong-Il proves that being feared can be more effective than being loved by the people. Today, there must be an equal balance between generosity and being feared. Pope Francis and Kim Jong-Il prove that both tactics are effective in leading, but the situations in which they are effective vary. Therefore, Machiavelli was correct in that being feared is a quality of a good leader, but was mistaken in believing that being generous did not make for an effective leader.

Er is vaak sprake new wave identiteitsverwarring. Conclusie Historische competentie Een specifieke vorm new wave samenhang cre A ; euml ; ren is zaken in een historisch perspectief plaatsen. Belemmeringen, verduisteringen. Bij elk new wave onze jongeren is heated verloop new wave het proces anders.
